1937 - The Krispy Kreme Doughnut is Born

Vernon Carver Rudolph, the founder of the Krispy Kreme Doughnut Company, bought a doughnut shop in Paducah, Kentucky, from a French chef from New Orleans - although legend has it he won the rights to the company in a poker game! In purchasing the company, Vernon received the company’s assets, good will, and the rights to a secret yeast-raised doughnut recipe.
During the early summer of 1937, Rudolph decided to open his own doughnut shop.He and two other young men set off in a 1936 Pontiac and arrived in Winston-Salem NC USA with $25 in cash in their pockets, justa few pieces of doughnut-making equipment, the secret recipe, and the name "Krispy Kreme Doughnuts".
They used their last $25 to rent a building across from Salem College and Academy in what is now called historic Old Salem. With too little money left to buy ingredients, Rudolph convinced a nearby grocer to lend them what they needed in return for payment once the first doughnuts were sold.
On July 13, 1937, the first Krispy Kreme doughnuts were made and sold at the new Winston-Salem shop.Soon afterward, people began stopping by to ask if they could buy hot doughnuts. The demand was so great that Rudolph opened the shop for retail business by cutting a hole in the wall and selling doughnuts directly to customers. This innovation was the beginning of Krispy Kreme’s retail service.

40s & 50s - The Doughnut Making Process is innovated!
By now there was a small chain of stores, mostly owned by Vernon’s family. They all used the Krispy Kreme recipe, but each made their doughnuts from scratch. For Vernon and Krispy Kreme, the results were always good, but not consistent enough. So he set about to focus on a system that delivered the perfect with the new Krispy Kreme automatic doughnut cutter. Proofing, cooking, glazing, and screen loading become entirely automatic. This was the first version of Krispy Kreme’s continuous yeast doughnut-making equipment you see today, where doughnuts are formed from dough extruded by air pressure to form a perfect doughnut shape.

60s & 70s - The Krispy Kreme store design is created
The design of Krispy Kreme stores became consistent including the hallmark green tile roofs and heritage road signs were established.
Krispy Kreme founder, Vernon Rudolph died in 1973, and the company was reorganised for sale to Beatrice Foods Company in 1976

80s & 90s - Krispy Kreme becomes a 20th century icon
At 60 years old, Krispy Kreme earned its place as a 20th century American icon in 1997, with the donation of company artifacts to the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History

2003 to today - Doughnuts the ‘hole’ world over
The Krispy Kreme map is now international with stores covering most continents throughout the world! Krispy Kreme Australia was the first expansion outside of North America, with doors opening in 2003. Since then the UK, Korea, Hong Kong, Mexico and more recently Philippines and Japan have opened.
Today, Krispy Kreme Malaysia open the first store in Berjaya Times Square.

So, if you ever happen to be shopping in Berjaya Times Square (BTS), do drop by at the store which was located next to the main entrance of the complex, and have a review on the 2 blogs link I have included in here. :)
